  15. A Sad Day for Detroit's Finest

  17. <p>     When Detroit police chief William Hart and his former deputy
  18. were indicted last February for stealing $2.6 million from the
  19. city, it seemed that the troubled department had nowhere to go
  20. but up. Wrong. Last week, after an eight-month FBI
  21. investigation, 11 current and former police officers and five
  22. civilians were charged in a scheme to provide protection for
  23. drug dealers and money launderers. Among those arrested: Mayor
  24. Coleman Young's niece Cathy Volsan-Curry and her father, Willie
  25. Clyde Volsan Jr. The pair allegedly introduced the cops to
  26. undercover FBI agents posing as drug dealers.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     The FBI, which videotaped the sting operation, claims that
  29. police officers protected seven air shipments of cocaine and
  30. laundered money, besides escorting the fake drug dealers around
  31. Detroit in police cars. "This is a sad day," said police chief
  32. Stanley Knox. "It's only a few people, but it's going to hurt
  33. everybody."
